Donald Trump will be the President of the United States again. The Republican wins the election against Kamala Harris – four years after a loss he has yet to admit.
– It is a political victory that our country has never seen before, he says in front of jubilant supporters.
The election was predicted to be exceptionally close. In the end, it was Trump who drew the longest straw in several of the decisive swing states.
Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin were painted in a different party color compared to the election four years ago, in Republican red.
Trump went out a bit early and declared victory in front of cheering supporters at his Palm Beach, Florida, vigil – a historic and “unprecedented” victory.
– We have a country that needs help, says Trump, and promises to put things right.
The 78-year-old also looks set to win in the number of votes in the country at large, which he did not do when he won the 2016 election.
“Want him to agree”
Trump’s Vice President-elect JD Vance was also on stage and said he had witnessed the greatest political comeback ever.
Outside the fair hall where the vigil was held, more celebrating supporters gathered. Patrick Mac from New York was there early with an American flag in hand.
– It feels good! I just want it to be over now, so he can save the country, he told TT’s reporter before Trump was to appear.
TT: What do you want to hear from him?
– I want him to unite America, including the Democrats. But they must also treat him fairly.
Kamala Harris has not yet been seen. The vice president’s camp announced early in the night that she does not intend to comment on the results until later on Wednesday (US time).
Chaotic farewell
Donald Trump has secured at least 277 out of a total of 538 so-called electoral votes – while Kamala Harris is estimated to have 224. Then the counting of votes has not yet been completed in four states.
In the 2020 election, Joe Biden won in Georgia with a margin of just under 12,000 votes – after which it was later noticed how Donald Trump, in a conversation with the state’s election officer, had requested that he “find” enough votes to change the result.
A fight over the correct results of the election culminated on January 6, 2021, when the outgoing Trump called on a crowd to march on Congress and “fight the hell out of” as the result was formally determined, which was followed by a violent storming of the Capitol building.
Trump becomes the oldest person to become president of the United States, at the age of 78. Outgoing President Biden was 77 when he took office. Trump also becomes the first president to be convicted of federal crimes, when he was convicted earlier this year of accounting violations.
“Want to be optimistic, but…”
Democrats also held a local vigil in Trump’s hometown of Palm Beach. The longer the election night dragged on, the sparser the gathering became.
– It doesn’t feel good. We haven’t managed to get enough people to realize that Trump is a fascist. He is deceiving people, said Drew Martin, who works with environmental issues and is active in local politics in Palm Beach, to TT at that vigil earlier in the night.
As the first polls were about to close, Trump claimed via social media that there is “a lot of talk about massive CHEATING in Philadelphia,” without providing any evidence for it. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner quickly refuted this.
Alongside the presidential election, it is clear that there will be a shift in power in the Senate, where the Republicans will gain a majority.
