On Thursday, Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Dorin Recean paid a working visit to Varniţa, in the Security Zone of the Republic of Moldova.
The 14 localities on the left side of the Dniester under the jurisdiction of Chisinau will be provided with energy resources until they are connected to the networks managed by the constitutional authorities, said Maia Sandu, according to the agency Moldpres.
“I listened to the situation in each locality and noted the immediate needs. I understand that support is needed in the form of wood, pellets and generators. We also discussed a solution that cannot be implemented immediately, but which is very important: we will offer more autonomy to the institutions that will have biomass power plants. That means biomass power plants. We are now waiting for the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development and the town halls to prepare these projects for several public institutions on the left of the Dniester, so that we can provide autonomy for schools, kindergartens, town halls and other public institutions”, said Maia Sandu.
The President of the Republic of Moldova gave assurances that until the networks are interconnected, the authorities will continue to provide citizens on the left side of the Dniester with help in the form of generators, medicines and other necessary resources. Maia Sandu said that she spoke with the president of Ukraine about the supply of coal.
„Yesterday I discussed with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, about a potential solution for Ukraine to supply coal to the electricity generation company on the left of the Dniester. Thus, the region could produce electricity, and the left bank of the Dniester would settle with Ukraine by supplying electricity. The governments of Chisinau and Kyiv are to discuss the details of this potential solution“, added Maia Sandu.
Maia Sandu emphasized that this crisis is caused by the Russian Federation, after Gazprom unilaterally decided to stop gas supplies.
