Major change of strategy at Microsoft! The tech giant is ditching HoloLens

Microsoft recently announced the end of production of the HoloLens 2 headset, which marks a significant change in the company’s strategy for augmented reality, writes Microsoft Central.

The device, launched in 2019, will continue to receive security updates and critical software patches until December 31, 2027, with software support officially ending in 2028. HoloLens 2 was much more advanced than its predecessor, but nevertheless failed to establish itself in an increasingly competitive market.

Although it initially attracted interest in the virtual and augmented reality space, Microsoft has not shown any notable progress in this direction.

HoloLens division described as a ‘disaster’

According to sources, the HoloLens division was described by a company employee as a “disaster”. Microsoft has dropped Windows Mixed Reality development, a sign that the tech giant is realigning its priorities.

Also, the US Army’s $22 billion Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) project encountered significant difficulties during testing.
