ESET, the German security company behind the antivirus software of the same name, provides remarkable advice to Windows 10 users who cannot upgrade to Windows 11. The company advises users with old computers to look for an alternative to Windows.
As the end of support for Windows 10 draws closer, ESET sees a ‘catastrophe’ coming for tens of millions of Windows 10 users who cannot update to Windows 11 due to older hardware. Cybercriminals can easily exploit the security holes that arise after the Official support for Windows 10 ends in October.
‘Dangerous situation’
ESET speaks in one new blog post of an even more dangerous situation than in 2020, when Windows 7 support ended. This time it concerns more users who were still working with the system shortly before the end of support for Windows 10.
Currently, Windows 10 has a market share of 63 percent worldwide, while Windows 11 only has 34 percent. Over the past two months, Windows 11’s share even fell slightly. In Germany, Windows 10’s share is slightly higher, according to ESET: 65 percent. For comparison: at the end of 2019, only 20 percent of users were still working with Windows 7.
Then on to Linux
According to ESET expert Thorsten Urbanski, it is time to switch to another operating system at all costs. If Windows 11 is not an option, he says people should install Linux. “ESET recommends moving to Windows 11 as soon as possible. Alternatively, a Linux system may be a good option, especially for older hardware,” Urbanski said.
He substantiates his advice with, among other things, the costs involved in continuing to run Windows 10. Microsoft has announced that it will provide longer support for Windows 10, but for a fee. Consumers can purchase one additional year of updates for $30. Companies can receive updates for another three years for a fee, but the costs double per year, making it quickly no longer attractive to run the old system.
Hardware-eisen Windows 11
Many old Windows 10 computers cannot update to Windows 11 because they do not meet the requirements. hardware iron. Microsoft adheres to a number of strict spec requirements, including TPM 2.0. Some users use all kinds of technical tricks to install Windows 11 on unsupported PCs, but that’s not for everyone.
