Majority of the House of Representatives wants an age limit on fat bikes

In the House of Representatives there is a majority for an age limit for cycling on fatbikes. The thicker, smaller type of e-bike should now also have a minimum age according to the PVV.

PVV Member of Parliament Heutink says this on X. Remarkable, because previously the PVV seemed sufficient to only enforce better on, for example, tuned fatbikes. The BBB also posts about fatbikes and hopes that Minister of Transport Madlener will speed up the age limit of 16 and the helmet requirement.

The age limit is not fixed: although politicians agree on a minimum age, there is no agreement on what it should be. GroenLinks-PvdA want 12 years, the police want 16 years. The reason for an age limit: more than half of the serious accidents with fatbikes involve children between the ages of 10 and 14. A quarter of the victims suffer brain damage.

Minimum age on fatbikes

Still, Madlener is not convinced. He does not want a helmet requirement and thinks that a minimum age will prevent pupils from being able to go to school on an electric bike. He has a point: (how) is the difference made between a regular e-bike and a fat bike? All parties are now busy making plans for an answer to the question of how serious accidents with fat bikes can be limited. Madlener would not rule out any measures, despite the fact that it is a legally complex matter, writes the NOS.

More information may become available in two weeks, when the House of Representatives will hold a debate on road safety.
