“Beets, a seasonal vegetable with many health benefits. Beetroot is the main ingredient in the famous Russian borscht and became famous in the 50s for its detox and anti-cancer effect. Unjustly condemned as containing a lot of sugar, beetroot has only 47cal/100g and is the friend of the figure.

Low glycemic index

With a low glycemic index and a carbohydrate content of 8.5%, beets are nutritious and can also be consumed by people with diabetes. The high fiber intake recommends it for those with constipation problems, it stimulates intestinal transit and reduces the absorption of cholesterol from food. “We can raise it to the rank of anti-anemic food because it is rich in folic acid and minerals (potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron). It contains a lot of beta-carotene and vitamin C with a tonic and revitalizing effect, zinc and selenium with a role in increasing immunity and disease resistance.

Beetroot is an important source of nitrates with a positive effect on blood pressure and sports performance. 120ml of beetroot juice reduces blood pressure by 10mm Hg. The same glass of beet juice increases physical performance by 20% and decreases the oxygen consumption required for exercise,” explains Dr. Bilic.

The pigments give it antitumor properties

  • Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, to eliminate toxins from the body. Beetroot stimulates the functioning of the liver, kidneys, gall bladder, spleen and digestive tube, and beetroot juice is used as an energiser in recovery from illness.
  • The pigments in beets remain stable in the digestive tract, and the acidity and increased temperature from cooking do not affect them. They are used as food dyes, with them we can color pickles, rice, boiled eggs or potatoes. Even urine can be colored red after eating beets.
