Malader Zverev also failed in Montreal

Due to a cough, French Open finalist Alexander Zverev missed the semifinals of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal.

After problems with his own serve and an actually unnecessarily lost first set, the Hamburg native lost 6:7 (5:7), 6:1, 4:6 to the US-American Sebastian Korda in Canada.

As before, Zverev was eliminated in the quarterfinals at the Olympic Games. Zverev made eleven double faults in the match, which lasted over 2 hours and 19 minutes and had ups and downs.

Dominant start is not enough

Against Korda, who entered Montreal with the confidence of winning the tournament in Washington, Zverev was ahead 3-0 and 4-1 at the beginning. After the perfect start, however, he brought the world number 18 back into the game with weaknesses in his serve and let him hold on to his serve at 4-4.

When he got himself into trouble again a short time later with an avoidable error on his own serve, he threw his racket slightly against the cushion in anger, but secured the 6:5. The German also led in the tiebreak, but made his seventh double fault of the first round and lost the first set.

Zverev complained several times about people running back and forth in the stands during the matches. The world number four had to cough again and again, as he has done in recent days. Zverev had already complained of health problems when he was knocked out in the quarter-finals at the Summer Games in France.

Alexander Zverev: “Sometimes I can’t breathe”

From the second set onwards, Zverev stabilized again on his own serve and dominated for a while. He won the second set at breakneck speed and with six games in a row against a Korda who was prone to making mistakes.

“Sometimes I can’t breathe,” Zverev then said to the referee during a change of ends in the decisive section. With two double faults in a row, the 2021 Tokyo gold medalist lost his service game at 4:5 and was beaten shortly afterwards.

The tournament in Cincinnati in the USA is already scheduled for next week. Zverev is seeded third there and has a bye at the start.
