Mallorca’s northernmost destination is the spectacular Cap de Formentor, which most people think is worth the difficult journey.
Mallorca’s northernmost destination
On the holiday island of Mallorca, you should not only look for beautiful beaches, but also beautiful nature spots. Spain’s largest island has plenty of varied landscapes.
The most dramatic views can be found in the northern part of Mallorca on the cape called Cap de Formentor. The postcard landscape is familiar to many from social media and travel advertisements.
The steep rock rises to a height of almost 400 meters above sea level at the point where the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range ends. Most travelers want to save the view in their vacation photos.
How to get to Cap de Formentor
Access to the scenery offered by Cap de Formentor is not easy, as it requires driving on a 20-kilometer, tightly winding serpentine road. The narrow roads make even an experienced driver catch his breath.
The road is in good condition for the entire route, but the danger spots are caused by sharp bends and huge differences in height.
Due to the challenging route, the road is currently closed to motorists from the beginning of June until the end of September. The experiment started in 2018 has become an annual practice.
The driving ban is valid between 10 and 10:30 p.m., so in practice it is possible to visit there early in the morning, as long as you make sure to be out of the area by ten o’clock.
In the summer season, Cap de Formentor can be visited by bus number 334 from Alcudia or Pollença. Cycling is not restricted in the area.
Outside of the summer season, Cap de Formentor can be accessed freely with your own car, and no special permits are required for the route. Even then, it’s worth making the drive first thing in the morning, because there are enough tourists in Mallorca all year round, and passing other vehicles and parking the car is sometimes difficult.
If you visit Cap de Formentor with a rental car, it is not a good idea to go with a too big car, which can feel awkward in tight turns.
Cap de Formentor is one of Mallorca’s most popular attractions
Many drivers consider the scenic route to Cap de Formentor one of the most beautiful in Europe. There are plenty of viewpoints along the way, for example Mirador Es Colomer, which offers an unobstructed view of the sea.
There is also an old lookout tower in the area, from where you can see the Cape of Cap de Formentor from above – as well as the bays of Pollença and Alcudia. Scenic spots along the drive are clearly marked with traffic signs.
At the very end of the cape rises the white lighthouse of Formentor, which is the main point of the trip for most visitors. You cannot visit the inside of the lighthouse, but there is a cafe and a shop in connection with it. On a clear day, it is possible to see from the lighthouse all the way to the neighboring island of Menorca.
The most tourists visit Cap de Formentor during the island’s most popular holiday season, i.e. June–September. Niemenkärki is also popular among cyclists.
