During the two-day forum program, over 2,000 Russian and foreign experts will take part in 46 events on key topics on the Arctic agenda.
On December 12-13, 2024, the XIV International Forum Arctic: Present and Future named after A.N. will be held in St. Petersburg at the Expoforum Convention and Exhibition Center. Chilingarova. The main theme of the forum is “Human-Centered Arctic as a Priority,” which implies ensuring sustainable development with a focus on realizing human needs as the driving force of economic growth and on involving residents of the entire country in the development of the macro-region. The main issue of the event will be the search for ways to achieve national development goals in the Arctic.
“In the May decree, Russian President Vladimir Putin defined the country’s national development goals until 2030. 11 national projects have been identified aimed at achieving national goals. The Arctic is a macro-region with unique legislative, economic, social, climatic and logistical features. Therefore, at the forum, as the key thematic public event of the year, we will discuss plans and mechanisms for implementing the country’s national development goals, taking into account the specifics of the Arctic zone.”,” noted first vice-president of the Association of Polar Explorers Mikhail Slipenchuk.
In accordance with the theme of the forum, all issues raised will be considered through the prism of creating a comfortable environment for northerners to live, work and rest. At the same time, the discussion will take place along four thematic tracks defined to solve the objectives of the event: economics and transport as a service, living environment as a value, technology and science as a mechanism, and conservation as a basis.
The forum will open with a plenary session “Human-Centered Arctic: Achieving Russia’s National Goals in the Far North,” where heads of federal authorities, business, scientific and public organizations will present reports and proposals. On the second day of the forum, a plenary session “Ahead of Challenges: Future Trajectories for the Subjects of the Arctic Zone” will be held, dedicated to the formation of solutions to anticipate economic, technological and climate challenges in 10 Arctic subjects. In addition, the event participants will discuss the results of the first stage of the Development Strategy of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation, implemented since 2020, as well as the need to make adjustments to this document.
The forum will traditionally include a conference on the development of the most important Russian transport artery – the Northern Sea Route. The event will feature three separate thematic sessions. The importance of the largest shipping route increases every year not only for residents of the North, but also for the entire country, which is emphasized by the theme of the conference: “Northern Sea Route. Bigger than the Arctic.”
For the first time, the business program included the session “A new market is better than the old two: adaptation of Arctic projects to changes,” dedicated to economic restructuring in new conditions. Also new topics of discussion for the forum will be the development of creative industries such as cinema and theater. In addition, the organizers propose to discuss the potential of Arctic spaces for discovering talents and socializing young people.
Traditionally, a large international agenda is planned. The forum will include sessions on the topics of Russian-Chinese interaction, the Arctic as a territory of cooperation and international scientific dialogue. Special attention will be paid to cities, including the development of support settlements in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation and the implementation of master plans. The session “The Family of Indigenous Peoples: the basis for preserving culture and traditional way of life” is timed to coincide with the Year of the Family announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The importance of resolving the issue of personnel shortage will be reflected in a separate personnel conference. Topics for discussion will also be the implementation of the new law on northern delivery, telecommunications infrastructure, energy, subsoil development, biodiversity protection, creative economy, socio-economic development of indigenous peoples and security.
The youth platform of the forum will be the educational and career guidance project “Meeting of Generations”, implemented by the International Humanitarian and Educational Center “Poles of the Earth” of the Association of Polar Explorers. As part of the event, one of the stages of the project will take place; 800 schoolchildren from St. Petersburg, the Leningrad region and other regions will take part in it.
The event program will be complemented by an exhibition of projects being implemented in the Arctic and advanced developments for the development of the Far North.
The forum is held with the support and participation of both chambers of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, the State Council of the Russian Federation, the State Commission for the Development of the Arctic, the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East, relevant ministries and departments. The organizer of the forum is the Association of Polar Explorers.
