Man sentenced to 3 to 8 years in hospital for setting fire in Castelo de Paiva – Portugal

A 63-year-old man was sentenced this Friday at the Feira Court to a security measure of internment, between three and eight years, for having set a forest fire in Castelo de Paiva, in the district of Aveiro.

During the reading of the ruling, the presiding judge said that the Court had proven most of the facts contained in the accusation.

The panel of judges considered the defendant to be unaccountable, sentencing him to a security measure of internment, which could range from three to eight years.

This sentence was suspended on the condition that the defendant underwent a specialized evaluation and did not fail in treatments and consultations.

The accused was accused of a forest fire crime and another of possession of a prohibited weapon, for having in his possession a knife longer than 10 centimeters.

The events occurred on May 11, 2023, in Fojo, União de Freguesias de Raiva, Pedorido and Paraíso, in Castelo de Paiva.

The suspect was arrested, outside of the act of committing a crime, in July of the same year by the Judiciary Police (PJ).

At the time of the arrest, the PC explained that the fire had been caused by the use of a direct flame, with no known motivation for the criminal act.

“The location is a forested area composed of eucalyptus trees and spontaneous vegetation, and the fire did not reach greater proportions due to the rapid intervention of the Firefighters”, said the Judiciary.
