Manchester City put a transfer offer on the table for a striker from the Romanian national team, but he refused the proposal from the Premier League club.
The former international recently revealed why he made this decision and why he decided instead to sign the contract coming from another top European team.
Ciprian Marica, offered by Manchester City
Ciprian Maria recently revealed that Manchester City put a transfer offer on the table during his time at Shakhtar Donetsk. The striker who debuted in big football at Dinamo Bucharest transferred to Ukraine in 2004, in exchange for five million euros.
He quickly adapted to football in the neighboring country and was constantly called up to the Romanian national team. After three years spent in Donetsk, in which he won two titles with coach Mircea Lucescu, Ciprian Marica received the offer from the Premier League, from Manchester City.
The “tricolor” chose to refuse the proposal from England because, at the time, Manchester City did not have the strength it has today. Instead, in the summer of 2007, the former striker chose to move to the Bundesliga and signed a contract with Stuttgart, for whom he played 93 matches, scoring 19 times.
“I had two offers, one from Manchester City and one from Stuttgart. Nothing recommended Manchester City at that moment, only the fact that Sven-Goran Eriksson was the coach, but it was not today’s team, not even by a long shot,” said Ciprian Marica, according to iAMsport.ro.
Manchester City, in free fall
Manchester City was taken over in 2008 by Sheikh Mansour. Thus, after four years, the “Citizens” managed to win the title in the Premier League.
Under the new management, Manchester City became one of the strongest teams in Europe, and in 2023 they managed to win the UEFA Champions League. At the same time, the team currently trained by Pep Guardiola has won in six of the last seven Premier League seasons.
In the current season, Manchester City seems to be going through a more difficult period and is in a decline in form. After 18 matches played, Pep Guardiola’s team is seventh in the table with 28 points and has gone four consecutive games without a win, in which they have recorded two defeats and two draws.
