Manikheir, a subsidiary of the Canadian group Medicom, inaugurated a single-use glove factory in Bessé-sur-Braye (Sarthe) in April. Nitrile gloves, a substitute for latex, are widely used in the medical field, dentists and the food industry.
A patented process, without chlorine or accelerators, unlike Asian productions, allows these protections to be put on and taken off as easily as if they were chlorinated. The factory, which will manufacture three models of different thickness and length, is one of the only ones to produce this type of glove in Europe, along with that of a Portuguese competitor, whose process is different.
While the bulk of volumes are imported from Asia, this project allows for large-scale relocation. Our aim is to encourage business leaders to make sovereign purchases for part of their needs.“, says Gérald Heuliez, Managing Director of Manikheir. The company was selected in 2021 by the Hospital Buyers Network, which it has been supplying since May. The plant aims to produce 900 million units per year and generate 50 million euros in sales in 2026. This project, an investment of 88 million euros supported by France 2030, offers reindustrialization to the site of the former Arjowiggins paper mill, which was liquidated in March 2019. Some 150 jobs will be created, half of which will be filled by former Arjowiggins employees.
