Manousos Manousakis: Today is his funeral

Today at noon at the First Cemetery of Athens, the funeral of the well-known director will be held Manousou Manousakis, who passed away at the age of 74 on Wednesday, November 20 from acute leukemia, his wife, Maria, revealed.

Relatives, colleagues and friends will say the great director the last “goodbye” at 13:00.

Who was Manousos Manousakis?

Manousos Manousakis was born in 1950 in Athens. He studied directing at the London Film School in England. When he returned to Greece in the early 1970s he started working initially in the cinema.

One of his first works was the film Bartholomew in 1973. In this film he had a triple role as he wrote the script and directed and produced it. The film received a special mention at the 1973 San Remo Film Festival, but in Greece it was banned by the junta, this film was also screened in a cinema in Thessaloniki in 1973 (Vas. Olgas Street and Martiou Street), the actors were almost all residents of Chiliomodius of Corinth. There was also a junta policeman at the entrance of the cinema.

Other film productions followed, such as “Archontes” in 1978, “The Scarecrow” in 1985, while he participated in the films “Souvliste them!” and “The Return Song”, where he was present as an actor.

In the mid-1980s he took his first steps as a director of television series. In particular, he directed the series: “Kallikanzarodoulies” (1985-1986), “Micrographies” (1986-1987) and “The Best Years” (1989).

However, his name has been associated with directing and producing Greek television series on private television from the early 1990s until today. The drama series he directed are scripted based on forbidden loves, while some of them, such as “Heart Whispers”, “Soul Touch”, “Don’t Say Goodbye”, “Love Came from afar” are considered among the most successful in history of Greek television.

With themes that revolved around forbidden love and social issues, these series managed to move audiences and record high ratings. Manousakis managed to marry artistic sensibility with commercial success, creating productions that remain timeless.
“Heart Whispers”: His series that managed to surpass the World Cup in France!

The series “Psithiroi Kardias” recorded a mythical percentage for a series in the ratings.

Characteristic of the frenzy that prevailed for this particular series, was the fact that the episode aired on February 9, 1998 scored a rate of 76.7%, surpassing 3,500,000 viewers.

Not even the World Cup in France had managed to catch such numbers in the summer of 1998.

The television series that aired from October 6, 1997 to June 22, 1998 on the Mega Channel television station, was one of the most popular programs in the history of Greek television and by far the most popular of the 1990s.

In the cinema, he directed the films “You Received Appointment” in 1996, “Red Dragon” in 1998 and “Uzeri Tsitsanis” in 2015.

Also in recent years, he had great success with the series “Red River”, while currently the series “The Net” is being shown on ERT, where he signed the direction.

Manousos Manousakis leaves behind a rich legacy in the field of art. With his film work, he laid the foundations for freedom of expression in difficult times, while with his television productions he raised the bar of Greek television. His ability to tell stories that touch people deeply will rank him among the country’s top creators in their genre.
