Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu recently posted a clip on TikTok in which he shows a tattoo with the message “The VAT is not increasing” on his left hand. “Said and done!” is the title under which the video was published, in which Ciolacu emphasizes his promise during the election campaign.
On 28 October 2024, in the midst of the election campaign, the Prime Minister categorically stated that VAT would not increase and pledged to get a tattoo of this message as proof of his commitment. At that time, Ciolacu also ruled out the possibility of increasing the single tax rate, stating that it will remain at 10%. “How to increase the single rate on income from 10% to 16% when we have the highest taxation of work on low and middle incomes in Europe? What normal person, in their right mind, would do this?”, he declared, G4Media reports.
However, despite these promises, the Ciolacu 2 government, formed after the elections, adopted at the end of 2024 the austerity ordinance, which was implemented on January 1, 2025. It provides for controversial measures, such as freezing pensions, child allowances and budget workers’ salaries, but also the elimination of some fiscal facilities and the reintroduction of the “pole tax”.
