Marko: Perez is still the best solution for Red Bull given the alternatives

Helmut Marko in a recent interview said that Sergio Perez is still the best option for Red Bull to finish this season, given the alternatives, but left open the possibility that the Mexican could leave the team at the end of the year, despite Perez recently signing a two-year contract extension.

Sergio Perez will be in the Red Bull Racing car after the summer break because now we have races at the tracks where he was good last year and we rely on his consistency. He has repeatedly shown good performances, and was also very quick on Saturday in the last race weekend at Spa.

Perez doesn’t need to get faster, but more consistent and, given the alternatives, is still our best option,

said Marko who denied speculation that F1 owner Liberty Media played a role in keeping the Mexican at Red Bull.

As he said:

Reports that his continued involvement is due to Liberty Media’s desire to drive to Mexico are not true. They certainly want him to participate in his home race, but our driver selection is not based on Liberty’s intentions.

As for Liam Lawson, Marko said that Red Bull will announce what will happen to him this September, while he also spoke highly of Isack Hadjar.

We will announce what happens with Liam Lawson in September. The fact that he was allowed to gain further Formula 1 experience at Imola had been planned for some time. Even if the competition wanted to use him on loan, he is not available for that.

Our Formula 2 driver Isack Hadjar took his fourth win at Spa. He clearly has potential for Formula 1. We’ll see how it all plays out, but he’ll definitely take on a role. He could, like Lawson, spend a year as a test driver and simulator.
