Members of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee (Afet) will today question the candidate for European Commissioner for EU Enlargement, Marta Kos.

After an approximately three-hour hearing, the representatives of the political groups in Afet will also give an assessment of her performance. They may also request additional explanations from her. Hearing of Marta Kos at the Afet committee, which also includes Slovenian MPs Milan Zver (EPP/SDS), Matej Tonin (EPP/NSi), Matjaž Nemec (S&D/SD), Marjan Šarec (Renew/Freedom) and Vladimir Prebilič (Zeleni/Vesna), will start at 9 am.

The candidate will initially have 15 minutes available for the presentation. This will be followed by questions from MPs, who have divided their time according to the size of the political groups. At the end of the piece, she will have another five minutes for closing remarks. After the hearing, committee members will have about an hour to deliberate within their political groups. Their representatives will then meet behind closed doors and evaluate the candidate.

For a successful hearing, it will have to be supported by the coordinators of the groups that have a total of at least two thirds, or 51 out of a total of 79 members. If they are not satisfied with her performance, they can also send her additional written questions or invite her to an additional hearing. It can be expected that, in addition to the expansion of the union, the former Slovenian diplomat will also be questioned by the MEPs about the alleged pressure on her subordinates at the Swiss embassy and allegations that she cooperated with the Yugoslav secret service Udba. They will probably also be interested in her views on Russian aggression against Ukraine.
