The Maserati Biturbolaunched in 1982, represented a turning point for the brand and for the entire Italian automotive sector. Designed under the guidance of Alejandro De Tomaso, this compact coupé challenged established brands such as Alfa Romeo e Lanciaestablishing itself as an icon of performance and style. The aggressive design, conceived by Pierangelo Andreanicombined with its high performance, made it a car sought after by enthusiasts. Equipped with a V6 engine with twin turbochargers and an innovative three-valve-per-cylinder configuration, the Biturbo offered unrivaled acceleration for its category, taking Maserati to a new level.
One of the distinctive aspects of the Biturbo was the elegance of the interiors. In 1984, Maserati collaborated with Missoni to create the seats, expressing a discreet and refined luxury that embraced traditional Italian craftsmanship. However, the Biturbo model did not stop there. In 1989, Maserati celebrated its 75th anniversary with the Shamal, an enhanced version with a renewed design that embodied the essence of Italian grand tourers. Designed by Marcello Gandini, this car was equipped with a V8 biturbo 3,217 cc capable of delivering 322 horsepower, allowing it to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds. The muscular lines and aerodynamic profile made it a masterpiece of design and engineering, with details such as the rectangular and ellipsoidal headlights adding a distinctive touch.
Shamal production ended in 1995, after just 369 specimensmaking it one of the rarest and most desired Maseratis. Today, this automotive legend lives on thanks to the project Restomod MA-01 Biturbo Shamallaunched in 2022 by Modena Automobili. Using a 1983 Maserati Biturbo Coupe as a base, the team updated the vehicle to bring it closer to the specifications of the Shamal, keeping the essence of the original model intact, but elevating its performance.
The Restomod MA-01 Biturbo Shamal is equipped with an engine 3.0 liter Twin Turbo V6which generates 500 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.0 seconds. The suspension has been revised for better handling and stability, while the brakes have been upgraded with Brembo calipers and ventilated discs, for optimal braking. On the aesthetic front, Modena Automobiles redesigned the bodywork, using steel and carbon fiber to lighten the vehicle. There lowered front grilleintegrated LED headlights and enlarged air intakes give the car a modern and aggressive look.
The interior is no different, with new fully customizable Recaro seats and a TFT digital instrument clusterwhich combines retro ’90s charm with modern features, including an advanced infotainment system. Production is limited to just 33 examples, each handcrafted in Modena with extensive customization options. Deliveries are expected within 8-10 months from the order, with a starting price of 585,000 euros.
With prototype completion scheduled for 2025, the MA-01 Biturbo Shamal project represents a tribute to Maserati’s heritage, fusing past and future in a masterpiece of engineering and style.
