Stellantis has confirmed that it will not sell the Maserati brand, despite an earlier warning from CEO Carlos Tavares that it will close automakers that are not operating profitably.
“Stellantis reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the bright future of Maserati as the unique luxury brand among the 14 Stellantis brands,” the automaker said in a statement, while also reaffirming its commitment to the entire portfolio of brands.
As it reminds Index.hr, a few days ago, Tavares told reporters: “If they don’t make money, we will close them.” He added: “We can’t afford brands that don’t make a profit.”
Tavares also told Bloomberg Television: “Brands are here to be taken advantage of. If they’re not able to monetize the value they represent, then decisions will be made.”
The statement by the head of Stellantis came after the profits of the group, which also owns Peugeot, Opel, Fiat and others, fell significantly. The company does not publish results for individual brands, except for Maserati, which reported an adjusted operating loss of 82 million euros for the first half of the year.
Some analysts previously noted that Maserati could go up for sale, while some other brands such as Lancia or DS could be at risk of being discontinued, given their marginal contribution to the group’s overall sales.
