Maserati sales have been in free fall for several months, falling below those of Ferrari and Lamborghini.
We know that the automobile industry is not in the best shape, and in fact, it is quite the opposite. Indeed, the situation is very complicated for many manufacturers, while the crisis affects everyone overall. However, they are not all in the same boat, and some have much more difficulty than others. This is for example the case of Maserati, whose situation is particularly worrying, and has been for a while now. We will obviously explain everything to you in the rest of our article below!
Maserati losing momentum
Indeed, we must first remember that in 2017, Maserati reached a global sales level of 51,500 vehicles. And already at the time, this seemed insufficient to meet the ambitions of the former boss of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), Sergio Marchionne. However, in 2024, these figures would make the current managers of the trident brand dream, because the latter has since foundered and is showing a sharp drop in its registrations. And for good reason, according to data provided by the Italian union FIM CISL and relayed by the ItalPassion site, the Italian manufacturer only produced 9,760 cars in 2024.
This figure marks a dizzying drop of 64% compared to 2023, a year which was already far from flamboyant with only 27,166 vehicles manufactured. And looking at the details of the numbers, the severity of the situation becomes even more evident. The MC20, the brand’s flagship super sports car, was only produced in 260 units this year, compared to 1,244 in 2023. The GranTurismo and its convertible version, the GranCabrio, only totaled 2,250 units, a drop marked compared to the 8,680 copies of the previous year.
An unprecedented crisis
For its part, the Grecale SUV, which is supposed to be a more accessible model and a growth engine for Maserati, has also seen its production collapse. With only 7,250 examples produced in 2024, it shows a spectacular decline compared to the 17,242 units leaving the factories in 2023. This last figure is all the more worrying as the Grecale was supposed to compete with models like the Porsche Macan, but could soon to be overtaken by the Ferrari Purosangue, a much more elitist SUV.
Alongside these disappointing figures, the Italian manufacturer announced the abandonment of development of the MC20 Thunderbolta 100% electric version of its super sports car. This withdrawal illustrates the brand’s current difficulties in participating in the electric transition which is transforming the global automobile industry. As premium manufacturers compete for innovations in the field of electrified vehicles, this decision could further isolate Maserati in an ultra-competitive market. Now, and faced with these alarming results, a crucial question arises: what future for Maserati under the governance of Stellantis?
For a brand as prestigious as Maserati, the stakes go beyond simple financial recovery. Maserati’s history, marked by successes in motor racing and iconic models, is part of the world’s automotive heritage. However, this historical wealth is not enough to mask the current weaknesses of its product portfolio and the absence of significant innovations.
