Matt Gaetz has withdrawn from the race for U.S. attorney general. It was the name put forward by President-elect Donald Trump to lead the US public ministry, but there was a serious risk that the Senate would not confirm his appointment, due to accusations of inappropriate sexual conduct, illicit drug consumption and obstruction of justice.
“It is a great honor to announce Congressman Matt Gaetz as Attorney General. Matt is a talented and tenacious attorney,” Trump wrote when he announced his selection, adding that he “distinguished himself in Congress” for the way he helped carry out the ” desperately needed reform of the Department of Justice.” Trump also mentioned that Gaetz would end the “partisanization” of the judicial system.
Gaetz is under investigation by the House of Representatives Ethics Committee for sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. According to several witnesses, the congressman had gone to a party with a minor under the age of 17, where he had consumed illegal drugs.
