With the end of the broadcast of The Penguin on HBO, many fans questioned the absence of Batman in the series. Fortunately, there is no reason to worry and it is master Matt Reeves himself who explains the reason to us.
Maybe Batman was on vacation
When it was released two and a half years ago, the film The Batman was able to conquer both critics and the public. With impeccable photography and masterful directing, director Matt Reeves and his teams have delivered us a great superhero film and even a great film in short, so it’s no great surprise that a sequel has been announced for release in 2026. However, in the meantime The Batman: Part II we recently got the series The Penguin centered on the character of Oswald Cobblepot who we already had the opportunity to see in the film with Robert Pattinson. This truly renowned antagonist of the Batman universe is sublimated in his Machiavellianism and his cruelty throughout these eight episodes.
While the last episode of the series aired a week ago, a large number of fans wondered why Batman is not present in The Penguin. Is he on vacation? Is he having a good time with Catwoman? Nope. Matt Reeves himself explained this absence during an interview with our colleagues at Digital Spy :
It’s a time of great unrest in the city (of Gotham), the series takes place literally a week after the events of the film. Much of the city is in complete despair, the police are overwhelmed and crime is rife. This is an extremely dangerous context.
(Batman) is there, but he’s trying to deal with the consequences of all these events and to a certain extent, he feels responsible for them.
Given the context in which the series takes place, it’s actually completely logical that we don’t see Batman in The Penguinwho is too busy dealing with the chaos that has been caused by the Riddler’s actions. To see our dear Batman again, we will have to be patient and wait until October 2026 to see the continuation of the adventures of the Dark Knight.
Tell us in the comments if you would have liked to see Batman in the series or if his presence would have been too much and don’t miss the revelation that was made by Matt Reeves about The Batman : Part II.
