It was created so that children who are blind or visually impaired feel represented in society, while it is worth mentioning that in the Barbie Fashionistas collection, an African American version of Barbie with Down syndrome was also released.
The company worked with the American Foundation for the Blind to ensure that everything from the doll’s eyes to her clothing was captured correctly.
The doll holds a white and red cane, while her gaze looks slightly upwards and outwards to “accurately reflect the distinct gaze of a blind person”.

After conducting tests with blind and visually impaired children, it was decided that the doll should be dressed in clothes made of satin and tulle fabrics. Details such as the loops on the back of the doll’s blouse and the elastic waist of the skirt were created in an effort to ensure that dressing the doll would be easier.
