Maybe James Hetfield and Jerry Cantrell will record a joint album one day?

Guitarist of the group Alice In Chains, Jerry Cantrellhe spoke about the possibility of collaborating with the singer of the group Metallica, James Hetfield. Answering readers’ questions in the new edition of the magazine Metal HammerCantrell was asked if another joint project might be on the way, after occasional collaborations over the years. Cantrell was one of the guest artists on Metallica’s cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s song, “Tuesday’s Gone,” from their 1998 covers album, Garage Inc. He also frequently performed alongside James and other members of Metallica at special benefit concerts.

“James and I have talked about it, kind of,” says Cantrell when asked if he would ever record an album with Papa Het. “We never had a formal conversation, but we played together at Kirk’s. I even spent a couple of nights at his place, where we ended up with guitars in the kitchen and on the porch. I would really like to write a song with him. Would it grow into something more? Well, he has a pretty demanding daily commitment. Ha ha! I would understand if it never happened.”

Cantrell has already declared in favor Metal Hammer to consider Hetfield one of the greatest frontmen in rock and metal music of all time.

“What makes James such a great frontman is his physical presence,” he explained. “No one else commands the same level of respect and attention without being selfish or self-centered.

“He is completely dedicated to music, entertainment and connecting with fans. That’s really inspiring to me. Especially since he’s been doing this for so long and he’s still looking for a deeper meaning.”

“Will he go down in history as a rock icon?” Cantrell added. “He already is—he’s the best man, man.”
