There is no better feeling than getting into the car on a frosty morning and feeling the warmth of the heated seats and steering wheel. A unique feeling offered by more and more companies, in the rich equipment versions of their models.

However, a class-action lawsuit filed in the US against Mazda alleges that heated seats in 2018 Mazda 6 models can get dangerously hot, causing burns to passengers.

The lawsuit, filed in California Superior Court by plaintiff Kristine D. on September 3, 2024, alleges that she “suffered severe burns as a result of using the defective heated seat in her Mazda 6.” Other plaintiffs also claim they suffered burns from the allegedly malfunctioning heated seats.

The class-action lawsuit alleges that Mazda knew about the issue for several years, but failed to inform consumers of the potential risk. It also alleges that Mazda exposed “thousands of Californians, including the plaintiffs, to safety risks while knowingly selling consumers defective vehicles that pose serious safety risks and are worth less than they are represented to be.”

The plaintiffs are seeking a jury trial while also seeking compensation for medical expenses, serious injury, loss of income and (we quote literally) “loss of capacity to enjoy life,” they say.

As soon as the news of this specific lawsuit was “uploaded” to the internet, many social media users were quick to state the… self-evident. How does one continue to sit and drive in a seat that… burns? They should have visited a dealership much earlier if they had noticed a malfunction. With this argument, many consider that the lawsuit is only for… compensations.
