Mazda is not abandoning the thermal engine, it even announces a new generation of gasoline engines and confirms the future SUV CX-5.
The Japanese manufacturer has confirmed that a replacement for the current generation CX-5 will be launched in the near future, a car that is part of the Japanese plan for electrification. Mazda has also confirmed the launch of a new petrol engine, which will be fitted to production cars from 2027, according to Engine1.
Eight years have already passed since the release of the second generation Mazda CX-5. The compact SUV of the Japanese was presented in 2016 at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but it will receive a new generation as soon as possible.
Although still among the most popular models in the Japanese lineup, the current CX-5 is starting to show its age, and Mazda plans to launch a new generation in the near future. Between 2025 and 2027, Mazda wants to launch new hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric models, marking the brand’s transition to electrification.
Mazda doesn’t want to give up the gasoline engine, so it’s developing a new one
Even though the news has focused on the Japanese brand’s transition to electrification, one thing catches the eye. Namely the fact that Mazda has confirmed a new generation of gasoline engines, which it calls Skyactiv-Z. The new engine will be launched in 2027, being a successor to Skyactiv-G and Skyactiv-X, keeping an in-line four-cylinder architecture.
In addition, the experience and data gained in the development of the new four-cylinder engine will allow the company to improve its in-line six-cylinder engines, which debuted with the new platform used for models such as the CX-60 or CX-80 SUVs.
Not many details are known about the new Skyactiv-Z, at least for now, but Mazda has confirmed that the engine will use the Lamda 1 combustion method, to achieve the best possible efficiency, but also to comply with the new Euro 7 emission standards .
