Mazda is on track for record sales in the US, without a single electric model

Mazda is still on track to break the 400,000 US sales mark this year, which would be a record for the brand. Also, Mazda is optimistic that this upward trend will continue in 2025.

Last year, Mazda’s US sales rose 23 percent, reaching 363,354 cars. By September of this year, it had already delivered 313,452 vehicles, 15 percent more than during the first nine months of 2023. The launch of the large SUVs CX-70 and CX-90 contributed to this sales growth. Mazda has also increased production of the CX-50 model, which it produces in a joint factory with Toyota, it says Jutarnji.hr.

Mazda North America CEO Tom Donnelly is optimistic about selling 450,000 vehicles in the US as early as next year. However, the brand backed away from an earlier, more ambitious forecast of 500,000 units, citing “no shortage of obstacles” facing the industry. “The transformation that the industry is going through once in over 100 years – we’re all dealing with it,” Donnelly told Auto News. “The core business will continue to be solid.”

What makes Mazda’s sales growth particularly impressive is the fact that it doesn’t have a single electric vehicle in its lineup, after it discontinued the ill-received MX-30 in the US last year. The Japanese company has taken a more measured approach to electrification and it is helping, especially thanks to growing consumer interest in hybrid vehicles. The Japanese automaker has been steadily expanding its lineup of hybrid and plug-in hybrid models since last year, with the CX-70 and CX-90 leading the charge as plug-in hybrids. It will begin deliveries of the CX-50 hybrid next month, and the model is expected to account for roughly 40 percent of all CX-50 sales.

“We are pleased with the impact our multi-solution approach is having on our business,” said Donnelly. “In addition to the growth we’re already experiencing this year, we’re excited about the impact the CX-50 hybrid will have on us.”

The hybrid CX-50 borrows its powertrain from Toyota. It consists of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with three electric motors, an electronically controlled CVT transmission and a small battery. It produces 222 hp and 221 Nm of torque.
