Mazda is planning a new petrol engine, the Skyactiv-Z

The new ones Mazdaperhaps including the new one MX-5will have a new petrol engine, called Skyactiv-Z. The Japanese company announced this during the presentation of its earnings for the last quarter, during which it officially announced that it was working on a new petrol engine which we have never heard of before.

One for all, all for one

To go into more detail, the new engine Skyactiv-Z from Mazda is intended to replace both the Skyactiv-G and the Skyactiv-X. It will therefore be, once again, an a four cylinderswhich will be designed taking advantage of the company’s experience gained over the years 6 cylinders in recent times.

Since the first cars with this engine will not arrive until 2027the company has remained confidential for now on all the technical characteristics, stating only that it will use the combustion method lambda to “achieve high thermal efficiency by achieving super lean combustion across a wide range of rpm, from the lowest to the highest, to provide excellent environmental and driving performance.”

If you’ve never heard of it, the Lambda (“λ”, letter of the Greek alphabet) represents the relationship stechiometrico air-fuel. When λ = 1.0 the amount of air is perfectly balanced with the amount of fuel during the combustion process.

In this scenario, theefficiency is optimized, thus reducing emissions. Simply put, it means that all the fuel is burned, minimizing harmful pollutants.

For Europe and the United States

According to what was declared by the company, the intention is to use the Skyactiv-Z initially in cars sold in Europa and in United Stateswith engineers already working to make the four-cylinder unit compliant with Euro 7 regulations and the EPA’s Tier 4 standards.

Since the next MX-5 will still have a combustion engine this could mean that the fifth generation Miata will be powered by a Skyactiv-Z engine. It remains to be seen whether some form of electrification will be included.
