McDonald’s launches new loyalty program

At the end of June, the American fast food restaurant McDonald’s decided to upgrade its McDo+ loyalty program. A decision that does not seem to have met with unanimous approval on social media.

KFC, Burger King, Subway, O’tacos… Many fast food chains have developed an application that allows consumers to accumulate points after they have passed the counter (or the ordering terminal). The market leader, McDonald’s, is obviously no exception. The brand has just unveiled its new loyalty offer. While the points system remains unchanged (one point per euro spent), the levels and rewards have changed somewhat. Now, with 25 points, Big Mac fans will be able to enjoy a free basic product such as a donut or a small drink.

Frozen desserts or small sandwiches (for 50 points), a Happy Meal (75 points), a classic Best Of menu (75 points) or even a box of 20 Chicken McNuggets (125 points) can also be obtained for free by loyal customers of the company with the golden arches. Nothing really revolutionary for the moment. The real novelty: the possibility of leaving, after your meal, with several collector’s items in the colors of the brand. A McDo pouch (50 points), a tube of Big Mac sauce (75 points), a bucket hat (100 points) or even, for the most patient and loyal, a beach towel (125 points) complete the gift catalog of this new loyalty program.

A (slight) bad buzz on the networks

However, this rather interesting idea seems to be perceived by Internet users as being the tree that hides the forest. Indeed, the other real change is the decline of all the reward levels. Previously, the first gift was accessible from 15 points (against 25 points today), the second from 30 points (50 points) and the third, 45 points (75 points).Um, what’s this new McDo loyalty program? or “They are just trying to convert me to bk (Ed. note: Burger King) at this level”we can read on the web. The king of burgers rewards each euro spent with two points. More generous than its golden competitor?
