McDonald’s linked to E. Coli outbreak in US. Shares sink 9% – Companies

McDonald’s hamburgers were linked to an E. Coli outbreak in the western US, which caused 49 people to fall ill and one fatality, according to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), cited by Bloomberg.

Health authorities said 10 people were hospitalized, citing a trip to McDonald’s before they fell ill and consumed a “Quarter Pounder,” one of the fast-food chain’s most popular burgers in the US.

The CDC said cases were reported in 10 states between September 27 and October 11, with the most cases occurring in Colorado and Nebraska. The number of cases could be higher, the CDC says.

Investigators are seeking to determine the origin of the contamination. McDonald’s has removed ingredients from these burgers, which will not be available for sale in some states, the CDC says.

The company’s shares sank in post-market trading in New York, falling 9.34% to $285.43.
