Incheon St. Mary’s Hospital, Regional Hospice Center Hosts ‘2nd Hospice Preliminary Specialist Course’ Education Completed
The Catholic University of Korea Incheon St. Mary’s Hospital recently completed the ‘2nd Hospice Pre-Specialist Course’ hosted by the regional hospice center.
Hospice activities require the participation of various professions for holistic care, including not only professional palliative care by medical professionals but also psychological, social, and spiritual relief for terminally ill patients and their families. Currently, there are hospice specialized education programs for doctors, nurses, and social workers in Korea, but there is a lack of educational opportunities for professions that are essential for activating hospice activities, such as clergy, therapists, psychotherapists, and geriatric welfare experts.
Kim Dae-gyun, director of the Catholic University Incheon St. Mary’s Hospital Regional Hospice Center (professor of family medicine), said, “The Catholic University Incheon St. Mary’s Hospital Regional Hospice Center has developed and is operating a hospice preparatory specialist course for non-medical professionals who wish to participate in hospice care activities with the aim of raising understanding, interest, and correct awareness of hospice and palliative care,” adding, “We plan to expand and operate the educational program in the future.”
Kim Min-ji (Daegu Veterans Hospital music therapist) said, “I work to help provide psychological support to patients and their families, but I felt regretful that there were not enough opportunities for specialized training to improve my skills,” adding, “I hope that education for psychological support specialists, like this hospice preparatory specialist course, will continue to develop and develop in the future.”
Meanwhile, this training was conducted over a total of 7 sessions, 24 hours long, from June 20 to July 11, and a total of 22 hospice specialists completed the training course.
