Professor Seon-Mi Kim of the Department of Radiology at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital Receives the Asian Society of Ultrasound in Medicine Award for Excellence in Exhibition
Professor Seonmi Kim of the Department of Radiology at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital won the ‘Best Poster Award’ at the ‘Asian Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology 2024 (AFSUMB 2024),’ a world-renowned imaging ultrasound medical society.
According to Seoul National University Bundang Hospital on the 26th, Professor Kim Sun-mi was honored with the only award in the breast field exhibition in recognition of the excellence of her ‘Comparison Study of Breast Tomosynthesis and Standing Automated Breast Ultrasound for Breast Cancer Screening’.
Mammography is the most common method of breast examination, but it is performed while standing with the breasts pressed, so it inevitably exposes the patient to radiation and can cause discomfort such as pain. Breast ultrasound, which is used as an auxiliary test for mammography, does not expose the patient to radiation, but unlike mammography, it is performed while lying down, and because the examination position is different, there is a limitation in that the shape of the breast in the image is different, making it difficult to directly compare the two examination images.
Professor Kim said in this study that the new breast cancer screening method, ‘stand-up automatic breast ultrasound’, was able to detect various breast lesions compared to mammography. Since the examination is performed in the same position as mammography, it is easy to compare the results, and since there is no radiation exposure, it can be helpful in breast cancer screening in the future.
