Seoul National University Bundang Hospital was designated as the main institution for the ‘Standard Leading Institution Support Project for Field Verification and Dissemination of Healthcare Standards’ conducted by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute, and held a commemorative event on the 22nd.

Healthcare data refers to all data generated from people, such as personal genetic information, health information, and treatment/prescription information. Recently, cases of utilizing healthcare data for actual diagnosis and treatment decision-making are increasing, and in the case of healthcare data, the formats are diverse and the amount is huge, so in order to smoothly link, share, and utilize it, ‘standardization’ of healthcare data is necessary.

The support project for leading organizations in healthcare data standards is a project aimed at verifying the standard system introduced for establishing healthcare data standards and expanding them in the field at the national level and promoting their expansion in the field in the future.

Seoul National University Bundang Hospital was selected as the main organization for this project in recognition of its expertise in the field of standardization of healthcare data, including its advanced medical information system and its own medical information standard operation and management process and system.

As the main organization, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, together with its partner organizations Ewha Medical Center Ewha Mokdong Hospital, Bit Computer, and Easy Care Tech, will conduct various research and demonstration projects to strengthen the effectiveness of healthcare data standards and apply the standards within medical institutions, and will play a pivotal role in establishing and disseminating healthcare data standards.

This project is expected to provide a foundation for easy exchange of healthcare data among medical institutions, public institutions, private sector, and patients, and to contribute to improving the efficiency and stability of healthcare services through sharing of medical records and prescription information between medical institutions. Furthermore, it is expected that global collaborative research and market entry will also be activated based on healthcare data that meets international standards.

Medicheck Korea Health Management Association, 31st Korean Basic Medical Science Conference, Excellent Poster Award

The Korea Health Management Association (Chairman In-Won Kim, hereinafter referred to as the KHA) presented a case of Echinostoma cinetorchis infection at the 31st Korean Basic Medical Science Conference on June 27 and received an award for excellent poster design.

This case is one in which a foreign body suspected to be a parasite was discovered during a colonoscopy examination of a female patient in her 60s at an internal medicine clinic in Pyeongtaek, and the parasite was identified at the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service Medicheck Research Institute.

The patient visited the hospital complaining of sudden indigestion, fatigue, headache, nausea, etc. after eating loach and squid recently, and underwent routine blood tests, stool tests, and colonoscopy to find the cause.

Blood and stool test results were all negative, but Echinococcus testis was found during a colonoscopy. This is the first case in Korea in 10 years since the case was reported in 2014.

The intermediate hosts of the previous testicular fluke are shellfish or loaches, and humans can also become infected if they eat infected intermediate hosts without cooking them. As the name suggests, the parasite’s testicles are often observed moving from their original location to another location, and eventually one or both testicles are lost.

In particular, most trematodes parasitize in the small intestine, but it is noteworthy that in this case they were found not only in the terminal small intestine but also in the ascending colon.

Professor Jeong Hye-gyeong of the Korea University Anam Hospital receives the Korean Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology Endocrine Society’s Outstanding Oral Presentation Award

Professor Hye-Kyung Jeong of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Korea University Anam Hospital received the Excellence in Oral Presentation Award at the ‘2024 Korean Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology Endocrine Society 33rd Academic Conference and Training Course’ held at the Yugwangsa Hall of Korea University College of Medicine on July 7.

Professor Jeong Hye-gyeong, along with Professors Park Hyeon-tae and Ryu Ki-jin of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Professor Lee Ji-eun of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, gave an oral presentation on the research topic “Proteomic analysis of menstrual blood as dried blood spots for discovery of proteins specific to endometriosis,” and was awarded this year’s award.

Endometriosis and adenomyosis can be treated before the pain becomes severe if discovered early, and can prevent them from becoming causes of infertility, etc. Diagnosis requires examination through laparoscopy, vaginal ultrasound, or MRI, but this has been raised as a problem that it can cause patients to endure pain and delay diagnosis.

In this presentation, Professor Jeong Hye-gyeong suggested the possibility of developing a diagnostic method that can diagnose endometriosis and adenomyosis early using menstrual blood. Professor Jeong Hye-gyeong explained, “We have optimized the method of analyzing and quantifying proteins in samples collected in the form of dried blood spots (DBS) from menstrual blood,” and “This is research to develop a convenient and patient-friendly early diagnosis method.”
