The view of southern European countries on the US elections is similar, but at the same time somewhat different, writes Äripää Southern Europe columnist Lauri Vahemeri.
Donald Trump’s election victory conquered the front pages and filled the news channels with analyzes and plenty of comments here, by the Mediterranean. Certainly not to a lesser extent than we have in Estonia, rather more. However, the focus of dealing with what happened has been different.
If in Estonia, in connection with the US presidential elections, the focus has been primarily on security issues, more specifically the question of whether US support for Ukraine will continue and what Trump’s policy will be in terms of ensuring NATO and European security, here the main topic among opinion leaders has rather been whether the current and usual order of things in the world will remain?
The day after the election, I came across one of the opinion leaders and experts here discussing the US. One could feel, if not shock, then certainly some consternation that, unlike the forecasts, the results had been revealed so quickly and the winner was already known. So, as a reaction to Trump’s unexpectedly convincing victory, the main questions immediately arose, why did it happen this time in the USA and does what happened reflect a broader trend in Western democracies?
Concern for the current liberal world order and economy was palpable, sometimes even more so, considering that, despite everything, this was the result. The latter was exacerbated even more by the assessment of the participating experts that this time a large part of the voters were only interested in the economy, and everything else was therefore largely overlooked.
The overarching conclusion was that US society is deeply divided, and that the recent election reflected growing discontent in society about inequality and the distribution of wealth. The number of people who feel left out has increased, and the results are now speaking for themselves.
