More than a year after it was Dave Mustaine terminated the contract with manager Cory Brennan, the group’s frontman Megadeth agreed to pay over $1.4 million to Brennan as part of the settlement. Mustaine still has a counterclaim against Brennan.
Brennan and his company, 5B Artist Managementsued Mustaine last June, alleging that Mustaine “unexpectedly and unceremoniously fired 5B,” without reason, according to the lawsuit he published Rolling Stone. 5B was leading Megadeth since 2014, and also manages the careers of bands like Slipknot, Lamb of God and King Diamond.
The lawsuit speculates that Mustaine wanted his son to take over as manager. “The letter incorrectly stated that from the time of termination 5B is not entitled to commissions for products or contracts entered into prior to termination,” the lawsuit states.
The management company claimed that Mustaine was owed commissions from 10 concerts held Megadethaas well as for the 34 that were planned, with a fee for merch sales. The lawsuit also includes $5,336.63 in Kentucky Derby tickets purchased for Mustaine and his wife.
On October 30, Mustaine agreed to pay $1.4 million to 5B, including $35,000 to Brennan himself. Megadeth Inc. will pay 5B $1,365,000, and various companies associated with Mustaine, such as Thrashville and Megadeth Swag, will pay a token amount of $1.
Attorney Howard King stated for Rolling Stone that after nine years of successful work for Mustaine, including winning his first Grammy and returning to stadium tours, 5B was forced to file a lawsuit because Mustaine did not want to pay the commissions he was owed.
