Mercedes also believes in it: the future of EVs is in solid-state batteries

Mercedes and Factorial Energy prepares to revolutionize the electric car sector with the new batteries at Solstice solid state. Expected for the end of the decade, These batteries promise to increase the autonomy of electric vehicles by 80%, thanks to a 40% higher energy density compared to current technologies.

The Solstice represents a significant step forward in electric vehicle battery technology. With an energy density of 450 Wh/kg, they will allow for a reduction in the size and weight of battery packsleading to lighter, higher-performance and more economical electric cars. In addition, the new dry cathode design will improve production efficiency and sustainability.

Solid-state batteries also boast lower fire risks.

Another significant advantage of Solstice batteries is increased safety, with a lower fire risk than traditional lithium-ion batteries. Regardless of the car you drive, the advice is always to have a fire-prevention device in the car. However, they are currently experiencing some difficulties with low temperatures.

The current state of development

Factorial has already delivered to Mercedes battery samples with quasi-solid electrolyte, reaching an energy density of 391 Wh/kg. The collaboration between the two companies, which began in 2022, is already producing tangible results.

In addition to Mercedes, Hyundai-Kia and Stellantis are also partners of Factorial Energy. Joint investments by Mercedes and Stellantis, for a total of 200 million euroshave allowed the construction of a factory and dedicated production lines.

While early results are promising, the real finish line is set for the end of the decade, when Solstice batteries should be ready for large-scale production and implementation in next-generation electric vehicles.
