Mercedes-Benz becomes the first manufacturer to test Level 4 autonomous driving systems in China. The new technology will be tested in several real-life situations.
The assistive technologies offered by new cars are constantly evolving, and manufacturers are working to create even driverless cars in the future. right Carscoops, Mercedes-Benz has received approval to begin tests of Level 4 autonomous driving systems on highways and city streets in Beijing, China. The manufacturer says this is a first.
Mercedes-Benz confirmed the tests via its page on the Chinese social network Weibo. The test regime uses special S-Class models equipped with a comprehensive suite of sensors, which appear to include multiple LiDAR elements housed on the roof in a curved unit.
Mercedes-Benz marks another first and becomes the first automaker to test Level 4 autonomous technology in China
Mercedes-Benz says Level 4 autonomous driving systems are being tested in a number of different scenarios. These include parking, reversing, navigating roundabouts and turning left at intersections, all without human intervention.
Also, these prototypes are equipped with a redundancy system to improve their safety. They can even slow down to pass safely through toll lanes on motorways.
The autonomous driving system used by Mercedes-Benz can operate without human supervision for long periods of time. Thus, the company continues testing new assistance systems and autonomous driving.
For example, last year Mercedes-Benz began offering the Drive Pilot Level 3 system to customers in the United States, becoming the first such system in the country to be fitted to a road-legal production vehicle.
