Messenger and WhatsApp will soon be able to make (video) calls with users of other chat apps

Starting next year, European users of Messenger and WhatsApp will be able to calling and video calling with users of alternative chat apps. Meta promises full functionality.

Users will see a notification each time a new alternative chat service becomes available. Users can accept or decline the integration with a new chat service. It will also be possible to move conversations with users of an alternative chat service to the inbox, or to a separate folder.

Meta must add interoperability to chat apps Messenger and WhatsApp under the European Digital Markets Act. The Digital Markets Act came into effect in March of this year.
