Meta close all of its platforms for RT and other Russian state media outlets, including Facebook, Instagram, Threads and WhatsApp, amid fears of influencing the US presidential election.
“After careful consideration, we have expanded our ongoing enforcement against Russian state media. Rossiya Segodnya, RT and other related entities are now banned from our apps globally,” the statement said.
The news comes just days after the U.S. Department of Justice revealed that $10 million was transferred by Russian entities to a Tennessee-based holding company to produce controversial and misleading online content aimed at further dividing Americans. Thirty-two internet domains were also seized.
Prior to the ban, RT had more than 7.3 million followers on Facebook, 1 million followers on Instagram, and 139,000 followers on Threads.
