Meta has received special permission from the authorities to start training AI models on public posts on Facebook and Instagram in the UK.
Of course, modern AI models today were basically trained on public data from the internet. Since these models began to gain popularity, the internet has become much stricter about the data it is willing to share. Many large websites now block AI access to their data unless they are paid for it. Therefore, using public data from Meta’s social media platforms seems like an easy choice.
However, a thorn in Meta’s entire effort has been the EU until now. But now, after a dialogue with the United Kingdom’s ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office), Meta now has an official license. The ICO claims that Meta will now make it easier for users to opt out of having their data used for AI training.
But nothing seems to be as innocent as it seems and thus a shaky moral ground has been created. There is even concern from many about having their data scraped to train an AI model, while the stigma against AI persists, with some losing their jobs to it and others simply finding it annoying.
And yet, all this has not stood in the way of achieving the goals of every large company and they continue to invest in artificial intelligence. Meta AI, for example, is now present in some of Meta’s services such as WhatsApp. The company is also working on smart AR glasses with artificial intelligence, which it considers the future of computing.
Then we also have Google’s Gemini, Samsung’s Galaxy AI and Apple Intelligence.
