Meta is fined for storing passwords unencrypted

Meta received a fine of 91 million euros from the Irish regulator. for storing passwords of up to 600 million Facebook and Instagram users unencrypted between 2012 and 2019. The DPC concludes that the tech company has violated GDPR legislation.

The regulator also blames Meta for not notifying the DPC of the security breach in a timely manner. Meta discovered the error in January 2019, but only informed the regulator a few months later.

Meta told Reuters that there is no evidence that the passwords have been misused in those years.
