Meta received the first EU competition slap

The European Commission almost fined Meta 800 million euros (specifically 797.72 million euros) by closing a competition law proceeding concerning the company that started in 2021. According to the EU’s executive body, the social platform illegally set up its own social marketplace, the Marketplace, on Facebook.

Facebook’s own marketplace, Marketplace, was launched by the social platform in 2016, and the service also appeared in Europe a year later. The Commission began investigating the platform in June 2021, and in 2022 it suspected the American multinational of illegally connecting the operations of Facebook and the Marketplace, at the same time displacing competitors from the platform.

In connection with the case, the investigative phase preparing the Commission’s official procedure did not go smoothly either, as the EU’s executive body imposed an extensive document inspection obligation during the data request, which Facebook was not willing to fulfill, and in the end the company sued the Commission for this in July 2020 . The procedure was finally able to start after the conclusion of the litigation with a delay of almost a year.

Incidentally, this was the first competition law proceeding initiated against Meta, or Facebook as it was then known, in the European Union, the company was previously and subsequently condemned mainly in data protection proceedings.

After explaining the contents of the decision, Meta announced that it will appeal against the Commission’s decision, which could result in legal proceedings lasting for years.
