Meta removes fake pro-Russian accounts from the Republic of Moldova before the presidential elections

The fake Meta accounts posted criticism of President Maia Sandu, pro-European politicians and close ties between Moldova and Romania, and supported pro-Russian parties in Moldova, the company said.

Meta said it removed seven Facebook accounts, 23 pages, one group and 20 Instagram accounts for violating its policy on fake accounts.

In Chisinau, authorities announced they had blocked 15 channels of the Telegram messaging app for violating laws on political party funding.

Moldovan police said Thursday that they searched the homes of leaders linked to businessman Ilan Sor as part of a criminal investigation into election fraud. Police said tens of thousands of voters were paid through Russian bank accounts to vote “no” in a referendum on EU membership held alongside the presidential election.

Pro-European President Maia Sandu wants a second term in the elections and has named the referendum on joining the 27-member bloc as the cornerstone of her policies.
