Mark Zuckerberg has announced several big changes to how Meta’s platforms operate and moderate, which the company says will support “free expression.” In practice, this means the elimination of fact-checking moderators and the relaxation of the policy on publishable content, first in the United States, and later extended to other regions.
The existing fact-checking program will be replaced by a solution similar to the “community comments” system seen on X, owned by Elon Musk, on Facebook, Instagram and Threads, which, by eliminating fact-checkers and experts, shifts the responsibility to the other users of the platform, i.e. to the community. According to X’s policies, the program is built on transparency, as contributions appear daily after being sorted by a ranking algorithm. In a similar spirit, potentially misleading posts may appear on Meta’s platforms that require more context.

The social media giant justifies the move by saying that the experts may be politically biased, as they have specific points of view, and content intended for information may become a tool of censorship. According to the official communication, so far “too many mistakes have been made during content moderation, which frustrates users”, as the measures too often hinder the free expression of opinion.
The company will start introducing the social comments system in the United States in the next few months, which it will continue to fine-tune for the rest of the year. Along with this, the full-screen notifications that appear on posts with dubious judgment will disappear, indicating that users can view the entire content of the post after clicking, instead labels will appear on the posts so that additional information related to its content can be obtained from the community.
