Meta’s mega growth: Even Facebook is catching up with young users

Over a million advertisers use Meta’s Gen AI, Threads is growing enormously, after Llama 3.1, Llama 4 is already being planned and even Facebook is becoming more relevant for younger users. Meta’s growth is enormous, also financially. Gen AI is determining the future of the company, which is underlined by many current developments.

The social media group Meta, which has long been socially relevant and sometimes even creates digital culture, has Second quarter figures and insights into further development. It is clear that Meta is particularly relying on Gen AI to optimize its own business and functions for users. Almost 3.3 billion people use at least one of the apps from Meta’s app family every day. Quarterly revenue increased by 22 percent year-on-year to 39 billion US dollars. And the number of ad impressions in the app family also increased, by ten percent year over year.

We had a strong quarter, and Meta AI is on track to be the most used AI assistant in the world by the end of the year. We’ve released the first frontier-level open source AI model, we continue to see good traction with our Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses, and we’re driving good growth across our apps,

explains the CEO Mark ZuckerbergHe is just naming a few of the points that clearly show how much Meta is currently relying on Gen AI and in particular its own Meta AI. The smart glasses from Ray-Ban and the company are just one example of a gadget that has integrated the extensively rolled out Meta AI – which was recently made more intelligent for WhatsApp and accessible to more users and in more languages. In addition, Meta’s recently rolled out AI Studio including Meta AI support ensures that Instagram creators can create both Creator AIs and AI Characters as AI extensions for their accounts.

In the spring, there were even reports that Meta AI could be integrated into iOS 18. Meanwhile, the company recently announced Llama 3.1 launched its most powerful AI models to date – and has already announced even better models with Llama 4 for 2025. The new Segment Anything Model (SAM) 2 also provides users of Meta’s AI features with completely new options for image and video editing. And Meta states that by June 2024, more than a million advertisers were already using the company’s own Gen AI to create ads. The focus on AI can be seen everywhere in the Meta cosmos; no wonder, after all, in spring 2023 it announced that it wanted to integrate generative AI into all services.

But Meta’s growth can also be seen in platform developments, from Threads to WhatsApp.

Next milestones for Thread and WhatsApp – Facebook also on the rise

As part of the release of its latest quarterly figures, Meta announced that Threads is close to reaching 200 million monthly active users. This is astonishing, as the platform was only launched last year and recently celebrated its birthday, when the new mark of 175 million monthly active users was announced.

Although there are already discussions about integrating advertising on Threads, Mark Zuckerberg explained that it might still be some time before the platform is monetized. The goal is for it to be used by a billion people in the future – a goal that Elon Musk also set for X. Zuckerberg explained in the Earnings Call:

(..) We’re making steady progress towards building what looks like it’s going to be another major social app. We’re seeing deeper engagement and I’m quite pleased with the trajectory here.

Recently, for example, Threads expanded a rewards program for creators, pushed forward Fediverse integration, and introduced a blue label for trending topics. It is also testing a NOW feature in the search area that shows live events related to trends such as the Olympic Games in Paris.

Overall, WhatsApp, which also relies on Meta AI features with features such as Imagine Yourself and Imagine Edit, is used by over two billion users. There is even amazing news for Facebook. The platform is still the one with the most users of all and growth among young adults in the USA and Canada has been particularly impressive in recent quarters, according to CFO Susan Li. Mark Zuckerberg said:

I’m particularly pleased with the progress that we’re making with young adults on Facebook. The numbers we’re seeing, especially in the US, really go against the public narrative around who’s using the app. A couple of years ago we started focusing our apps more on 18-29 year olds, and it’s good to see that those efforts are driving good results.

Meta: Future plans for AI and Metaverse will soon become more concrete

Both Mark Zuckerberg and current developments make it clear: Meta’s main bet is generative AI. Llama 4 is intended to be the most powerful AI model in the industry, an ambitious goal. And Meta AI is intended to be used by users even more intuitively and more often, and above all by more users than Google’s Gemini or even ChatGPT. The fact that the Metaverse is not completely written off in Meta’s plans is shown by a look at the development of the Quest 3, among other things. Sales have even exceeded Meta’s expectations. Most recently, for example, the company made the VR network Horizon Worlds available in more regions, including Germany.

At the Meta Connect on September 25 and 26, we can expect even more news from the company, especially about Gen AI and the Metaverse.
