The EU’s strict rules prevent Meta from releasing its new AI in the region, at least not initially.
Meta is working on the next generation of its new Llama language model, a so-called multimodal AI that can handle text, image, video and sound in parallel. The AI is expected to be released in the coming months, but to the publication The Verge says Meta spokesperson Kate McLaughlin that it will not be released in the EU. The reason must be that the regulations are considered to be unpredictable. There is no mention of whether it will be launched later or not at all. However, upcoming text-based versions of Metas Llama 3 will be launched in the EU.
Thus, Meta goes in the same direction as Apple, which will not launch its AI Apple Intelligence this fall together with the new operating system Ios 18.
Last week, the EU set deadlines for how AI companies must meet the requirements of the new, strict AI law. Technology companies operating in the EU will generally have until August 2026 to comply with rules around copyright, transparency and AI use.
