Mette Frederiksen and Trump have had a telephone conversation

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) spoke on the phone on Thursday with Donald Trump, who won Tuesday’s presidential election in the United States.

This is stated by the Prime Minister’s Office in a press release.

– We had a good conversation where, among other things, we had the opportunity to discuss the war in Ukraine, Russia’s aggression, the cooperation between Russia, Iran and North Korea and the challenges from China, says Mette Frederiksen in the press release.

The Prime Minister’s Office will not disclose who called whom, or how long the two spoke together.

Since Trump was president the first time from 2017 to 2021, Denmark has been rearming in the field of defense, which is something that the United States has requested from several countries for a long time.

It was also a theme during the conversation, the press release states.

– I have previously worked with President Trump and believe he was absolutely right when he repeatedly called for Europe to take greater responsibility for our own security.

– We have listened to that. And in Denmark we now spend 2.4 percent of our GDP on defense and security. This is more than a doubling of the level from the time before President Trump first became president, says Mette Frederiksen.

It has not always been that Mette Frederiksen and Trump have been close friends. When Trump, as American president, expressed an interest in buying Greenland in 2019, it was rejected by Mette Frederiksen.

This made Trump so offended that he canceled a planned state visit to Denmark.

He also called Mette Frederiksen’s statements in the case “nasty”. It can be translated as “disgusting”.

Mette Frederiksen emphasized on Wednesday at a press conference, where the head of government commented on the American election, that the relationship between the two is nothing wrong today.

– I have a good relationship with Trump. It is true that we had an exchange around Greenland, said Mette Frederiksen.
