Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) and Donald Trump were not exactly best friends when, as American president, Trump expressed an interest in buying Greenland in 2019.
Mette Frederiksen promptly rejected the proposal. Trump was so offended that he canceled a planned state visit to Denmark.
He also called Mette Frederiksen’s statements in the case “nasty”, which can be translated as “disgusting”.
But today the relationship between the two is good. This is what Mette Frederiksen says on a doorstep with Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen (V) and Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) about the outcome of Tuesday’s US presidential election. The trio congratulate Trump on a “clear” victory.
– I have a good relationship with Trump. It is true that we had an exchange around Greenland, says Mette Frederiksen.
The Prime Minister refers to the fact that she and Trump have subsequently met on several occasions.
Mette Frederiksen notes that you can talk to Trump in very direct language and that the Danish government is ready for that. For example, around the further support for Ukraine in the country’s war against Russia.
– You don’t need to wrap things up so much, says Mette Frederiksen.
