It is an unusual mobile application. And that says a lot about the tensions on the migration issue between Washington and Mexico a few weeks before the official inauguration of Donald Trump on January 20. On Friday, Mexico announced the creation of an “alert button” for Mexican migrants established in the United States, to be used in an emergency, to protect themselves from any immediate risk of arrest. “If you find yourself in a situation of imminent arrest, you activate an alert button which sends a signal to the nearest consulate”detailed Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente. So that consulate staff “can mobilize and pay attention to the targeted person”explains the Mexican daily The Universalwhich adds that the application “will automatically detect location” of the consulate by geolocation.
Mexico has a network of around fifty consulates in the United States serving the 12 million Mexican migrants north of the Rio Grande, not counting dual nationals and descendants of Mexicans. The application should also send a message to the person’s relatives and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramon de la Fuente added during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning press conference. The application will be available on January 6, just before the Republican takes office, elected for the second time on November 5.
«Invasion»
The billionaire qualified «d’invasion» the entry of visa-free migrants into the United States through his country’s border with Mexico. He promised to implement “the largest expulsion operation (of foreigners) in the history of the United States” by declaring a state of emergency and relying on the army.
Mexico is in contact with the governments of other countries in the region from which candidates for the American dream are leaving, such as Honduras and Guatemala to take stock of the situation, said the Mexican minister. A ministerial meeting is planned, although we do not yet know the date. The Mexican government is also preparing a document that emphasizes the contribution of Mexican workers to the American economy, said President Claudia Sheinbaum. Many of them live and work without legal documents in the United States.
It is estimated that Mexicans living in the United States will have sent a total of “nearly 66.5 billion dollars in the country in 2024, which will represent 3.7% of the national GDP”indicates the BBVA bank in a document dated August 29. “More than 1.7 million households, or 6.1 million people, depend directly on these resources”adds the Spanish bank leader in the Mexican market on the subject of “remesas”, money transfers from Mexicans abroad to their country of origin.
