The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has spoken with the future president of the United States, Donald Trump, about migration and security.
She writes this in a post on the social media X.
– I had an excellent conversation with President Donald Trump.
Here, the two discussed Mexico’s strategy in relation to migration.
– I said that no migrant caravans will come to the northern border because they are taken care of in Mexico.
– We also talked about strengthening cooperation on the security of both countries within the framework of our sovereignty, as well as about efforts against the abuse of fentanyl, she says.
According to the analysis company Gallup, migration was among the five most important issues for American voters in this year’s presidential election.
Republican Trump won the November 5 presidential election over Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
He has stated that he will make an effort to resolve the issue of border security. He has also said he will deploy the US military in a mass deportation of illegal migrants.
Trump said on Monday that he will impose a 25 percent tariff on Mexican and Canadian imports and 10 percent on goods from China.
– These tariffs will apply until drugs – especially fentanyl – and all foreigners stop their invasion of our country!, Trump wrote on his own media, Truth Social.
Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said Wednesday that about “400,000 jobs will be lost” in the United States if Trump makes good on his threat. Ebrard refers to a study based on figures from US car manufacturers that produce in Mexico.
Both Mexico and China have openly protested Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on their goods.
Sheinbaum has declared the threats “unacceptable” and China has said “no one will win a trade war”.
During his first term as president, Trump launched a full-scale trade war with China, imposing tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars worth of Chinese goods.
China responded again with tariffs on American products, which hit American farmers in particular.
