The new MG HS is entering Polish roads. First in a petrol version – with a 1.5 Turbo engine – and later as a Plug-In hybrid with 339 HP and an electric range exceeding 100 km. During the Polish presentation of these cars, we were able to familiarize ourselves with their interior, equipment levels, prices and availability.
MG HS 2024/2025 is the second generation of this car. We will recognize it by more slender headlights and a light strip connecting the rear reflectors. The first HS became very popular, not only in Poland, we will soon find out if the second generation will repeat this. The Chinese manufacturer (MG belongs to the SAIC Motor concern) is strongly developing the range of its cars, and also expanding the range of drive units. The new MG HS is joined by an interesting Plug-In hybrid drive with a 21.4 kWh battery, which is to provide a 103 km range in electric mode only. That’s a lot. Let’s first look at the interior of the HS.
MG HS – positioning and interior space
The new MG HS is, like its predecessor, a mid-size SUV. The length of the car is ~466 cm with a wheelbase of ~276.5 cm. So it is a slightly larger car than, for example, the Hyundai Tucson or Toyota RAV4, although of course external dimensions do not automatically mean specific interior parameters.
Well, we probably won’t complain about the amount of space inside the new MG HS. I’m 1.84 m tall and in the front – with the seat as low as possible – I had about 9-10 cm above my head, similarly in the back. Sitting “behind me”, I had 13-14 cm before my knees, which is a great result in this segment!
The driver’s seat has quite a wide range of adjustments, including 2-way lumbar support (the passenger seat does not have the latter option), although the angle of the front seat backrest cannot be changed. Fortunately, its angle is good enough that I also sat comfortably with good support under my thighs. There is also good support under my thighs on the rear seat, which is also a plus. There is also no shortage of foot space in the rear row. The lack of a central tunnel in the rear draws attention.
Rear seat passengers have interior lighting (side lamps) and their own air conditioning vents (no third zone).
The sound of the MG HS 2025 doors closing is okay, maybe not premium, but there is no tinny resonance either.
The quality of the interior finish of the new MG HS should be taken into consideration. The Excite version has fabric seat upholstery (quite good quality), without lumbar adjustment for the driver’s seat. The leather visible in the photos is the equipment of the Exclusive version. It is surprisingly pleasant to the touch, although it is eco-leather. The steering wheel is also covered with it, and here too the quality is reasonable, although you can feel a bit of roughness in the upper part of the rim.

On the doors it is soft under the elbows, and there is still leather on the door handle, but without the foam underneath. To the left of the elbow it is already hard, although the material used there is quite pleasant to the touch. On the windscreen, the material bends a little. Below the elbow, everything is already hard, and the pockets have no lining. The quality of the finish of the rear doors in the MG HS 2024/2025 does not differ from the front ones.
It is worth praising that the center tunnel is also covered with leather with some foam underneath. This makes a big difference in terms of comfort for our knees.
New infotainment system
The new MG HS has two screens embedded in one pane of glass – just like in the current BMW cars. The infotainment system has been refreshed – it now looks more aesthetically pleasing and fits better into the larger display. The layout and set of functions are similar to those in its predecessor.
The map view can be activated on the driver display.
MG HS drive: 1.5Turbo 170 HP petrol engine or 339 HP Plug-In hybrid
The basic drive unit for the new MG HS is a 1.5T engine with 170 HP paired with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic gearbox. The manufacturer declares that acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h should be 9.4 or 9.6 seconds, and fuel consumption in the WLTP cycle is 7.4 or 7.6 l/100 km, for manual and automatic gearboxes respectively.
Much more interesting from our perspective is the MG HS PHEV, or Plug-In hybrid. The system also includes a 1.5 l Turbo combustion engine (with lower power: 105 kW, 143 HP), which is connected to two electric units. The first, responsible for propulsion, has a power of 135 kW (183 HP), and the second acts as a generator: 110 kW (150 HP). In combination with a 21.4 kWh battery (most likely gross), this is to ensure a 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.9 s – the total power of the system is 249 kW (339 HP), although it must be remembered that the car has only front-wheel drive – hence the acceleration time is not so impressive.
And “burn”? As with Plug-In hybrids, this is a complicated subject (I recommend the material comparing the Audi Q5 PHEV vs. SQ5 TDI). The manufacturer declares that the MG HS Plug-In Hybrid is to travel 103 km in electric mode, while the WLTP fuel consumption is 0.54 l/100 km, which is of course typical for PHEV cars. These are good results, although the Toyota RAV4 PHEV can also do this. The total range (on one tank of fuel – 55 l – and one charge) is to be 1000 km. Impressive, although also achievable in the case of the RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid. We will have to wait at least a month to verify these assurances. The MG HS PHEV is to enter our roads in October. I will also mention that the on-board AC charger has a power of 7 kW. There is no option of charging with direct current (DC) – however, this is not necessary in the case of Plug-In hybrids in my opinion.
Unfortunately, we don’t have much information about the design of the drive system itself, or how it works. We know that there is a gearbox that has… 2 gears. The diagram also shows that the battery is under the floor – this is confirmed in the technical data: the ground clearance of the MG HS PHEV is 147 mm, where the combustion version is 182 mm. The question is how this will translate into the amount of foot space in the rear of the cabin.
Cena
Polish prices of the new MG HS have already started with the promotion:
- MG HS 1.5T 6MT 170 HP Excite: PLN 109.9k (instead of PLN 117.9k)
- MG HS 1.5T 6MT 170 HP Exclusive: PLN 120.9 thousand (instead of PLN 128.9 thousand)
